He Is My Shelter

Scripture:
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

Encouraging Message:

There’s something comforting about the word refuge. It means safety, protection, shelter from harm. And that’s exactly who God is for us—a safe place to run to, a shield when life’s storms rage on.

We often think of storms as metaphorical, but sometimes they’re quite literal. I remember reflecting during a brutal winter storm—my house was warm, the water was running, and the roof overhead kept the cold out. It was a moment of quiet gratitude.

But not everyone had that same protection.
Some faced the storm outside… with nowhere to go.
Yet even there, God was present. He shows up through the generosity of His people, the kindness of strangers, and the mercy that finds its way into the darkest corners.

This verse reminds us not only that God is our refuge, but also that He invites us to be a reflection of that refuge. To be a safe space. To be strength for the weary. To extend a hand when someone else’s world is crumbling.

A Sacred Perspective:

It’s easy to thank God for the shelter we have.
It’s another thing to say, “Lord, how can I be shelter for someone else?”
That might mean sharing your time, a hot meal, or a listening ear.
It could even mean offering compassion instead of judgment—because spiritual refuge is just as needed as physical.

Reflection:

  • In what ways has God been a refuge in your life—emotionally, spiritually, or physically?

  • Is there someone around you who needs to experience the shelter of God through your kindness?

Journaling Prompt:

  • Write a gratitude list for all the ways God has provided for and protected you.

  • Then ask yourself: What is one tangible way I can be a blessing to someone in need this week?
Write it down—and commit to doing it.

Closing Prayer:

Father, thank You for being my refuge when I’ve had nowhere else to turn. You’ve given me peace in chaos, strength in weakness, and shelter in every storm. Help me to see others through Your eyes, and show me how to extend Your love to those in need. Make me a vessel of refuge for someone else today.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
