The Role of Family in Spiritual Growth – Finding faith within your home.
Whether we realize it or not, family plays a significant role in our spiritual journey. It doesn’t matter how family shows up for you—whether in support, criticism, or indifference—it still has an impact on your growth.
Sometimes, family is encouraging and supportive of your newfound desire to strengthen your relationship with God. Other times, they may mock your faith walk or even criticize your journey. Regardless of their response, it can impact you. But you must remember: God is always with you.
If you are on this journey alone, stay connected to the Word and hold fast to God’s promises. It’s not always that your family doesn’t support you—it’s often that they simply do not know how. Many are so accustomed to their own patterns and beliefs that they can’t look past what’s familiar to them.
Matthew 10:37 (NIV):
“Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
This verse doesn’t mean we shouldn’t love our families—it means that our relationship with God must come first. Sometimes, this requires stepping out of comfort zones and standing firm in your faith, even if it means standing alone.
Building Relationships Outside of Family
If you find yourself walking this journey without your family’s support, it is essential to build connections within your church family or join faith-based communities online. Surrounding yourself with those who understand and encourage your growth is important.
We are blessed to have the ability to find people who share our faith and passion. Connecting with others who are on a similar journey will help you feel safe and supported as you share your experiences, revelations, and progress.
Hebrews 10:24-25 (NIV):
“And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
Praying for Your Family
Your role isn’t to force your family to understand your journey, but to pray for them. Not that they see things the way you see them, but that they build their own relationship with God and experience His love for themselves.
Sometimes, you will need to walk alone. But you are never truly alone, because God is with you. Pray for your family, love them where they are, and continue to grow in your own relationship with Him.
I didn’t grow up in church, and the Bible wasn’t something we learned about in my home. My desire to build a relationship with God began in my adolescent years. My Nana used to take me to church occasionally until I was about seven, and then we moved to Colorado, and that stopped.
It was a seed that was planted in me. And once the seed is planted, it is up to us to nurture it and allow it to grow.
Proverbs 22:6 (NIV):
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.”
Even if your family didn’t intentionally plant the seed of faith, someone in your lineage prayed for you. The prayers of our ancestors have power. And that seed remains. Home is where the heart is.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family, whether by blood or by faith. Help me to love them as You love them, while staying true to my own journey with You. Strengthen me when I feel alone and guide me to find community where I am encouraged and uplifted. Bless my family with the desire to know You and draw them closer to You each day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
