Healing from Past Hurts – Allowing God to Mend Your Wounds
Everyone can relate to having past hurts—and it is up to us to heal from them. One of the biggest reasons to begin your healing journey is simple: the person who hurt you has likely moved on, and you’re still carrying the pain. Another reason? You’re not living in the full potential God created for you, because you’re holding onto something that was meant to be released.
Let’s be honest—many of us desire closure. We want to hear, “I’m sorry for what I did,” and we crave acknowledgment of our pain. But the truth is, you may never get the apology your heart desires.
Imagine going into a conversation expecting to hear, “I’m so sorry for hurting you. I didn’t realize how much it affected you.” Instead, you hear, “I’m sorry you take things so personally. It wasn’t a big deal to me.”
One version shows accountability, the other shifts the blame. Unfortunately, the second kind is more common, and it often adds to the hurt you’re already carrying.
This is why healing must be between you and God—not you and the person who hurt you. God has given us tools for healing: therapy, self-help resources, and most importantly, His Word. Yes, therapy and books are part of the plan too. God placed them on Earth as instruments to help us on our journey.
One of my favorite scriptures that brings me comfort is:
Psalm 34:18 (NIV) – “The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
A broken heart can come in many forms—and this verse reminds us that God is right there with us in every one of them.
I remember the night I lay alone in a hotel room crying after I was sexually assaulted. There was no one there with me—except God. When my tears finally stopped and I woke up the next morning, I was still hurt, still afraid, and my mind was flooded with thoughts. But the one thing I knew without a doubt was that the comfort of the Lord had wrapped around me.
Every time our backs are against the wall, every time we feel alone—He shows up. And He shows up big.
God whispers to us, Choose you. Choose joy. Choose healing. That old saying "Let go and let God"—it’s real. And it’s powerful.
Smile. Embrace the inner you. The version of you that’s been buried beneath the pain because you were afraid to let people get close. Dance. Run. Jump rope. Be free.
Every adult has an inner child—some of us still know who that child is, others have tucked her away. But it’s time to bring her out again. Let her shine, and in doing so, you’ll bless others with your light.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for being close to the brokenhearted. Thank You for comforting us when we feel most alone. Help us to release the pain of the past and walk boldly in the healing You provide. Remind us that we are not defined by what was done to us, but by who we are in You. Restore our joy, awaken our inner light, and lead us back to wholeness. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
