Home in the Midst of Grief – Clinging to God After Loss
Grief is something that seems unbearable. Losing a child or a parent is said to be among the most painful experiences one can endure.
When I lost my son, it felt like a hole had been carved into my soul. I longed to be near him—I needed to feel his presence. I clung to his clothes, his bed, his scent. The weight of the loss was overwhelming, and I had no idea how I was supposed to continue life without him.
Finding Strength in God
In my brokenness, I had nothing but prayer and scripture to hold onto. I sought God more than ever before, not for answers about the loss, but for understanding of the life He gives us.
One thing that kept me sane was a truth I had carried since my children were young: My children were always God’s first. I was simply on borrowed time, entrusted with the gift of raising them.
Then, a friend who had lost her son earlier that year shared something profound:
"Life is like a round-trip ticket. We receive the ticket for our arrival (our birthday), and when it’s time to go home, we receive the ticket for our departure (our passing) to return to the Father."
Her words shifted something in me.
Holding On to His Promises
📖 Psalm 34:18
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit."
The only thing that made my pain bearable was God Himself. His presence, His Word, and His promises became my refuge. I wasn’t reading for understanding of loss—I was reading for understanding of who God is and what He has promised us.
Through scripture, I found comfort.
Through prayer, I found peace.
Through God, I found the strength to keep going.
Grief is a Journey, Not a Destination
Grief never truly ends; we simply learn how to live with it. It becomes a part of us, shaping the way we love, the way we trust, and the way we cling to God.
📖 Revelation 21:4
"He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away."
Even in the darkest moments of grief, God remains our home. He is the steady place when everything else feels uncertain.
A Prayer for the Grieving Heart
Father,
I come before You with a heart that feels shattered. I don’t know how to carry this pain, but I know that You are near. Wrap me in Your love, Lord. Hold me in the moments when grief feels unbearable.
Give me the strength to face each day, and remind me that my loved one is home with You. Thank You for being my refuge, my comfort, and my peace.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
💜 If you are grieving, know that you are not alone. God is with you, and He will carry you through.
