The Empty Chair at the Table – Finding Peace After Losing a Loved One

There’s one picture that always comes to mind—TyRee sitting at the dining table the last year of his life. I see it so clearly. That empty chair is a reminder of his presence, his laughter, his love. And yet, it is also a reminder of the new way of living I’ve had to embrace.

📖 Matthew 5:4
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted."

This verse has been a lifeline for me. Even now, as I walk through my home—the place TyRee grew up—his presence lingers in every memory, in every familiar space.

Finding Peace in Their Eternal Rest

We must learn to find peace in knowing our loved ones are no longer suffering. No more physical pain. No more mental burdens. In a world that can be so heavy, simply making it through each day can be exhausting. But now, they are free.

There is joy in knowing that they are in a better place. The selfish part of us longs to hold them close, to have just one more moment. But if we remove ourselves for just a second, if we let go of the pain long enough to see beyond the grief, we can rejoice that they are with Papa.

💛 My heart leaps with joy knowing my child is safe in the arms of God.

Honoring Their Memory While Moving Forward

The chair at the table may be empty, but the love is still present. We honor them in the way we live, the way we love, and the way we hold onto the promises of God.

📖 John 14:2-3
"My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

They are home. And one day, we will be reunited. Until then, we carry their love forward, finding peace in the promise that this is not the end.

A Prayer for Those Missing a Loved One

Father,

The chair at the table feels empty, but I know that my loved one is not lost. They are with You, whole and at peace. Help me find comfort in Your presence, knowing that You are close to the brokenhearted. Fill my heart with the kind of peace that surpasses understanding.

Until the day we are reunited, help me to cherish the memories, walk in faith, and find joy in knowing they are home with You.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

💜 If you are missing someone today, may you find peace in knowing they are with the Father. You are not alone, and you are deeply loved.
