Overcoming Self-Doubt – Believing in yourself through God’s promises.
Think back over your life to as young as you can remember—where did self-doubt begin? We aren't born with it. It’s planted. A seed that’s been watered and nurtured over the years by experiences, words, and environments.
Have you ever noticed how early self-doubt begins to creep into our lives? Think about when you had children, or maybe when you were a child yourself. Picture this: you’re sitting at the playground with your 3-year-old and they begin to climb the stairs to the highest slide they can find. You see them climbing higher, and panic sets in. Concerned for their safety, you begin to yell, “No! Get down! Stop!”
From their view, they were excited and eagerly climbing the steps with joy and determination. But something in you told them they couldn’t do it, and without realizing it, you planted a seed of self-doubt. Now, they’re questioning their ability.
What if, instead, you calmly walked over, offered your hand, and encouraged them to keep going? That simple act would plant a different seed:
You gently grab their hand—“I will support you.” 🌱
You say, “Yay, you got this!”—Confidence built. 🌱
They reach the top of the slide and you cheer them on—“I can do anything.” 🌱
This is how our Heavenly Father interacts with us. He gently guides us, encourages us, and helps us overcome our own self-doubt.
Isaiah 41:10 (NIV):
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Doubt is a form of fear. We fear we cannot do something, that we aren’t good enough, that we will fail. These are all seeds planted intentionally or unintentionally over the years. But now, we have the power to uproot those seeds.
Where we once said, “I can’t,” we replace it with, “I can,” before the words even leave our mouths.
Keep at the forefront of your mind that God’s plans are far greater than our own.
Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV):
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
God has made so many promises to us throughout the Bible. It is us who fail to remember, to seek, to ask, to lean on Him. But when we do, His promises will show up in our lives in unimaginable ways.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your unwavering promises and unending grace. Help me to uproot the seeds of doubt planted within me and replace them with the truth of who You say I am. Guide me to stand confidently in Your promises and walk in the fullness of Your plan for my life. Strengthen me to believe in myself through Your eyes. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
