The Power of Your Words – Speaking life and truth into existence.

We all know the scripture: “The power of life and death lies in your tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21) But how often do we truly believe it? Better yet, how often do we forget and speak freely, disregarding the power our words carry?

Our words have power—power to build or destroy, to heal or to harm. When we forget that, we say things over ourselves and others that can be detrimental to our lives and theirs.

Growing up, I would hear the elders say, “Keep your mouth off them people.” Why? Because they understood the power of words. I remember being about 9 or 10 years old when a neighbor angrily told her boyfriend, “Kiss my behind and die.” The next morning, I saw her on her porch sobbing and repeating, “I didn’t mean it. I’m sorry.” The man had died.

At that age, I didn’t know the power of the tongue. I thought she was a witch because her words killed him. But now, as I reflect, I realize it was the power of her words—spoken in anger and without thought. She meant what she said in the moment and it carried power.

Think of this: We are created in God’s image. So, if He has power in His tongue, so do we.

Hebrews 11:3 (NKJV):
“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.”

By His word, worlds are created from things that were not visible. Simply spoken.

Genesis 1:3 (NKJV):
“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light.”

So shouldn’t we speak life over ourselves and others? What we speak is what comes to pass.

But there’s more. The enemy hears what we speak, too. When we speak negatively, he takes the opportunity to water those seeds of negativity. But when we speak life, love, and light, he hates it—but there’s nothing he can do about it.

Want to make the devil mad? Speak love and light over those who have offended you, and watch how God blesses you for it.

I remember when I was looking for a house. My credit score was well below what any mortgage company would consider “acceptable.” But I went into it with the mindset, “If God says so, then it will be.” I never said, “I can’t do it.” Instead, I went through every step of the process, knowing what I looked like on paper but also knowing who I am in Jesus.

Thirty days later, I was closing on my house. That was 13 years ago. It wasn’t because of anything I did in particular—except for speaking life, believing, and standing on faith.

Isaiah 55:11 (NKJV):
“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me void, But it shall accomplish what I please, And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

The Word goes forth out of my mouth and it shall not return void. If that doesn’t excite you, I don’t know what will! When you have your morning conversation with Papa, what are you saying? Are you speaking defeat, fear, and doubt? Or are you speaking life, gratitude, and faith for what is to come?

I will be. I am. It is already done. Thank You, Father.

  • My children are saved.

  • My grandchildren are saved.

  • I will never struggle financially again.

  • Restore this relationship, place forgiveness in my or their heart.

  • I am the head and not the tail.

  • I am a multibusiness owner; my boss is Jesus and I am the CEO of His business.

  • I am a multimillionaire, the lender and not the borrower.

How are you speaking over yourself, your loved ones, and even those who have offended you? Speak life.

Closing Prayer

Father God, thank You for the power of my words. Teach me to speak life, love, and truth in every situation. Help me to be mindful of the words I speak over myself and others. Let Your promises flow from my tongue, never returning void. Strengthen me to walk in faith, knowing that You are with me. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
