Are You Truly Listening? – Hearing God’s voice in a noisy world.
It isn’t always easy to hear God in a world full of noise. There are countless distractions pulling us away from Him, and if we are not intentional, we will miss His voice. I have caught myself scrolling social media when I should be in prayer or during my reading time. How can I connect with God if I don’t intentionally build that relationship? The same goes for you.
We often value the opinions of family, friends, pastors, and even world leaders—leaders we don’t know personally but only through TV or social media. We listen to them, trust them, and believe what they say because we feel like we’ve developed a relationship with them. We invest time in them, so we value their advice.
But what about God? If we do not spend time with Him, seeking Him in all areas of our lives, how can we expect to hear His voice? The world is busy and constantly moving—when do we take time to slow down or even stop to listen?
Hearing from God requires self-discipline, an area of weakness for me. I won’t lie—I struggle with self-discipline if I am not held accountable. So for me, it takes drastic measures: leaving my phone in another room, setting alarms to ensure I get my desired reading time, putting my phone on Do Not Disturb—all just to spend quiet time with God. I need to eliminate distractions so that His word pours into my heart and fills my ears. For me, yes, it takes all of this. What will it take for you? Are you willing to make the sacrifice?
My daughter and I have conversations in the morning, most often about how we feel or how God is working on us. She recently received direction from God, and almost daily, she reflects on it. She shares how God is calling her to do something, but she can only hear Him because she has been spending time with Him. Her self-control in obeying His direction is inspiring.
Do you want to hear God’s voice? And more importantly, are you ready to listen?
Scriptures to Reflect On:
"My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27)
"Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know." (Jeremiah 33:3)
"Be still, and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10)
"Whoever has ears, let them hear." (Matthew 11:15)
Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father,
Help us to quiet the noise of the world so that we may hear Your voice clearly. Teach us to be disciplined in our time with You, to seek You with all our hearts, and to be obedient to Your guidance. Remove distractions from our lives that hinder us from listening to You. Open our ears, our minds, and our spirits so that we may recognize Your direction and follow it without hesitation.
May we invest in our relationship with You above all else. Let Your voice be the one that leads us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
