Trusting the Process – How life’s detours lead to your destiny.

Trusting the process hasn’t been easy for me. In fact, I didn’t even know there was a process. I was simply trying to manage life like so many others. Then, in my mid-20s, I started going to church, but honestly, I wasn’t fully paying attention, so I still had no clue that there was a divine process unfolding. As a result, I encountered many bumps in the road.

I had a child at 14—of course, out of wedlock. This wasn’t a detour; it was part of God’s process, not mine. I dropped out of school at 17 and later obtained my GED. That was part of my process, not necessarily God’s. I had another child at 19—again, God’s process. It was then that I realized I needed to make a change. I felt it was too late to go back to school for a diploma (shame told me that). My high school class of 1992 had already put in the work to earn their credits and walk the stage, while I felt like I had nothing. So, I thought I had no choice but to get my GED. But what I once saw as a setback was actually a divine detour that led me toward my destiny.

Through programs like Mi Casa and CWEE, I met incredible women who poured wisdom into me, like Mrs. Nora who I still run into at the local grocery store. Later, I was invited back to speak to women coming through the same programs, sharing my experience as an alumna. These were my first speaking engagements—even before I knew I would be a public speaker or that I even wanted to be one. I was already walking in my calling before I recognized it!

I wanted something different, but I still didn’t realize that God was shaping my destiny through my detours. Even in life’s unexpected turns, God gives us choices and places people in our path to help guide us. Whether we go right or left is up to us. But I have seen many people focus only on the bad things that have happened to them. They hold onto the pain and allow it to define them, ultimately affecting their destiny.

God may have a plan for us, but when we allow negativity to consume us, two things happen: we prolong the process of reaching our destiny, and quite often, we have to learn the lesson again. Wouldn’t it be easier to trust the process?

A few years ago, I posed a question to my son: Would you rather trust someone with your money or your heart? Money can be replaced, but we only get one heart.

Now, think about this: Would you rather trust your own process or God’s? God is the only one who has a process for our entire lives—from the moment of conception. So why do we struggle to trust the process? Is it because we are controlling? Because we haven’t truly built and nurtured our relationship with God? Because we are afraid?

What is your reason?

Scriptures to Reflect On:

  • "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." (Jeremiah 29:11)

  • "A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps." (Proverbs 16:9)

  • "We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." (Romans 8:28)

  • "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight." (Proverbs 3:5-6)

Closing Prayer:

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the detours, even when I don’t understand them. Help me to trust the process and surrender to Your divine guidance. Remind me that every twist and turn in my life is working together for my good. Teach me to release my own plans and fully embrace Yours. Give me the patience to endure the lessons I need to learn and the wisdom to recognize the purpose in every challenge.

Lord, I trust You with my process. Let my life be a testimony of how You use every moment—good and bad—to lead me toward my destiny.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
